Google recently announced it’s new Lens at the I/O developer conference this year. CEO Sundar Pichai was the one who rolled the curtains on this new product. Google Lens is a completely new way of seeing the world through your camera.
Let’s take the above picture as an example. Google can now easily understand the attributes behind the picture and can tell you that it’s a boy at a birthday party, also there’s family and cake involved and the boy was happy. This is how greatly Google has improved in the field of Computer Vision.
According to Sundar, “Google Lens is a set of vision-based computing capabilities that can understand what you’re looking at and help you take action based on that information. All of Google was built because we started understanding text and web pages. So the fact that computers can understand images and videos has profound implications for our core mission.”
Out of all the new things that were announced at this yers I/O, Google Lens looked to pique everyone’s interest. The all new Lens will be available first on the Google Photos app along with Google’s AI Assisstant. It will then be released for other products.
Google Lens is similar to Google’s search engine, just that here the image works as the input instead of the text.
Before giving various examples of how good Lens is, he showed us how much work is actually put int computer vision. Watch how the image of a tree which is taken at night, and is noisy, is optimized to look much clearer.
How It Works
Sundar Pichai showed how Google Lens could be useful by pointing it at a flower, a restaurant, and a router. Starting with the flower as soon as the camera was pointed on the flower Lens came up with the flowers info such as its name, biological name, and many more things. Coming to the restaurant, Lens not only tells you the restaurant’s name but also pulls up its ratings, the menu, active hours, or help you find out if there’s a table available tonight. Then came the router, Lens does a simple job here by connecting you to the router once you point it to the sticker at its back.

Google has been taking huge leaps in different fields keeping in mind the different user needs. This year’s I/O was a demonstration of just why Google is considered to be a great company.
